We had another very good event on Sunday 6th June with 10 donkeys taking part in two classes: four donkeys were longreined and six were driven, one in each class by a junior.
The timed route was approximately 3km around the field margins at Stable Court in Edenbridge (a little shorter for the longreiners) including three obstacles which had to be negotiated correctly. After thunderstorms and very heavy rain the night before, we were fortunate to have a dry and bright start to the day, but had to stop for half an hour in the afternoon during the 'skills' whilst another thundery shower passed through. The skills comprised a cone slalom, walking a straight line between two points, driving an L-shape of ground poles, moving a flag from one cone to another. Although it was a competition, the fun, happy and relaxed atmosphere was evident, with everyone in good spirits, despite some getting a drenching.
Our thanks to Val Newton for the use of her premises; our Presentation Judge: Lynne Hamill; our stewards: Sue Young and Barry Morse; and of course the donkeys.
The results are as follows:
Long Reined
1st Alice Webb with Guinness scoring 69 points
2nd Julia Webb with Spud scoring 65 points
(The other two long reined donkeys, Sooty and Pickle owned by Kathy Elvin, did not compete in the skills).
Driven
1st Alan Larner and groom David Smart with Barnaby scoring 110 points
2nd Carole Travell and groom Josey Travell with Trinitas Tintinnabula scoring 95 points
3rd Clare Strang and groom Emily Strang with Mina scoring 89 points
4th Diana Dunstan and groom John Dunstan with Amos scoring 77 points
5th Joanne Parrett and groom Tiggy Lavender with Rikita du Bocage scoring 59 points
6th Emily Strang and groom Clare Strang with Sophie scoring 40 points
Thank you everyone for your support, see you next year!

SOUTH EAST REGIONAL REPORT FOR THE AGM 2008
In November, the region held its Annual Christmas Dinner and Indoor Show. I am sure we all go home with sore throats with so much chatter going on.
We are very proud of Norman Roger who won the Marjorie Dunkels award, the first time it was awarded and he was presented with this at the Christmas Dinner along with so many other awards going to our very clever members young and old.
We started 2008 with the London Parade. It seems to get better and better with so many members with their donkeys who all look so smart.
We started the showing season with the South Eastern Donkey Show which was well attended. We thank all the competitors for their continued support.
Following this, we had Surrey County Show at Guildford which had donkey classes for the first time. It was very wet but they have confirmed they want to continue with the donkey classes next year and are so supportive towards the donkeys and are even trying to work on ways of getting the donkeys into the main ring.
After Guildford, we had Cranleigh and Chertsey shows. They also both had very good attendances.
There have been various other activities in our region including a Donkey Sanctuary workshop and Trec both held at Val Newton?s and very well attended.
We have had Open Days at Jo Follmer?s and Ann McCaig?s and also Junior and Dena Days. The Region also held 'Donkey Day Out' which was a very sunny day and resulted in over 300 people attending. (We also jammed the Rural Life?s website with hits, which has only happened twice this year).
The Region held its AGM at Jo Follmer?s house so members could see her many animals.
The changes to the committee were John Porter retired as Chairman to become Vice Chairman. The Chairperson is now Coral Weaver. Also I resigned as Regional Delegate and Mrs Tiggy Lavender has taken over this position. I have really enjoyed my time as Regional Delegate and wish Tiggy good luck in the job.

SOUTH EAST REPORT FOR 2007 FROM REGIONAL DELEGATE - ROSEMARY PORTER
Well despite one of the wettest years on record, the two periods of Foot and Mouth in this area, which affected the movement of animals in our area and shut several events including the National Show at Rodbaston, our area has been amazingly busy.
We started the year with the London Parade on New Years Day with 79 members and 40 donkeys participating in a wonderful day of celebration for the Society's 40th Birthday. We also had so many donkeys out on Palm Sunday, village fetes, junior days, craft days, Dena Day, Donkey Sanctuary courses, Area Reps open days and this year Driving days including Le Trec.
We had the South Eastern Donkey Show in May, where we had approximately 70 donkeys in attendance and had a good attendance at all the other shows in our area, Cranleigh, Oxted and Edenbridge, South of England Autumn Show, Chertsey.
The DBS marquee, shop and some donkeys were on show at Guildford Agricultural Show and Oxted and Edenbridge Show. We have also had trips out to meet the donkeys at Lady Fishers Marklye Stud (miniatures) and Donkey Day Out eventually got off the ground between the two Foot and Mouth restrictions literally within hours each way, but was very worthwhile and an excellent day where again we celebrated our 40th anniversary year.
Anybody who has seen our area magazine "Long Ears" will be very impressed with the information and content for which we offer a huge 'Thank you' to Barbara Roger, Editor of the super little magazine.
We had a well-attended Area AGM and have a dedicated committee who all work very hard and keep busy throughout the year for which we are very grateful. We are now looking forward to our annual Christmas Lunch and Indoor Show which is always very sociable and successful (70 members attended last year) and of course with the Christmas season coming, many members will be involved with taking donkeys to church services, mail delivery etc.
Wishing you all a very Happy Christmas and a successful New Year.
Rosemary

South East Regional Report for the 2006 AGM by Rosemary Porter
I have attended all the council meetings this year to date and have reported on a very busy Area.
The South East is a very large region which covers five county areas and seems to be very lucky with its Area Reps and magazine editor, Mrs Barbara Roger. This year started with the New Years Day Parade which was again a huge success and we looked very smart in our new blue uniforms. Our main event, the South Eastern Donkey Show was held in May at a new venue, Horton Country Park. Seventy donkeys attended and all competitors were very pleased with the new flat showground.
Also in the area, we had Cranleigh, Chertsey, Edenbridge & Oxted and Ardingly Shows.
Members took the DBS stand to Kent County Show, Surrey County Show, Edenbridge & Oxted Show and the Hop Kilns event; and donkeys and their owners have also turned out for various events around the area such as Palm Sunday, carnivals, village fetes, apple days and also Singleton Open Air Museum where donkeys show their versatility by ploughing and helping with the harvest.
Our Juniors are also well provided for, with twenty four members attending Tatsfield Donkey Club and Val Newton providing several craft days.
In September, we had Donkey Day Out at the Rural Life Centre in Tilford which is reported to be one of the most relaxed and friendly days in their calendar with over 330 people and 20 donkeys attending.
Our annual Christmas party is to be held at The Holiday Inn, Maidstone/Sevenoaks. This was chosen to try and reduce the distance the people from Kent normally have to travel and hopefully will ecourage a few more to attend.
On closing, we would like to record our thanks to Rob and Lesley Sims for all their hard work over the years and to wish them luck in their new life in France.
