Is your donkey legal?

Is your donkey (horse / pony / mule etc) legal?

It is a legal requirement that EVERY equine must, from 28th February 2005, have an equine passport. If you have a donkey (or horse, pony, mule etc) that does not have one, then you really should apply for a passport in order to comply with the law and avoid the possibility of a potentially large fine.

The Donkey Breed Society is a DEFRA recognised Passport Issuing Authority (PIO) and is able to issue passports for any equine (donkey, horse, pony, mule etc) that is not already registered by any other authority. If you wish to apply, please download the Passport Application Form (including full instructions), or if you would prefer copies to be posted, please send an sae, stating how many forms you require, to our Society Registered Office. Please ensure that the envelope is big enough as each form consists of approx. 8 sides of A4!

If your donkey or mule is already registered with another issuing authority, but you would like it, in addition, to be registered with us (for showing purposes etc.), please click for more details on Over-stamping of passports from other issuing authorities.
