Stallion Premium Award Scheme
In 1999, as a positive step to upholding one of the primary aims and objectives of the Society ‘To Improve the Breed’ the Stud Book Committee of The Donkey Breed Society introduced a Stallion Premium Award Scheme. This award to benefit a maximum of three Stallion owners annually with a monetary award of £100 for the owner and an additional sum of £40 to cover the cost of DNA testing to record for perpetuity their identity.
The purpose of such a scheme (which are used throughout the equine world as a means of identifying excellence) is to highlight the best available registered Stallions. and is adjudicated annually on the second day of the Championship Show to be adjudged by a BEVA Veterinary Surgeon appointed by the Society
In this way prospective mare owners and breeders will be able to see first hand that the high profile show ring winners are not always the best breeding prospects, and that Show ring assessment and breeding potential assessment may differ.
Only Stud Book registered Stallions can be eligible for a Premium and must stand at public stud at a pre agreed stud fee.
Mare’s keep by arrangement.
As a further incentive, a sum of £30 towards the cost of the stud fee is available to the owners of mares of such conformation that it is considered will benefit from the attributes of and are covered by the current Premium Stallion.
