The Summerhays Brood Mare Award Scheme
This scheme was established in 1979 in memory of our first president, Reggie Summerhays who died in 1976. A trust Fund being established from which the income should be used to make a financial contribution towards the future stud fees of mares whose progeny proved to be of exceptional quality. The main object of the scheme was to improve the Breed by encouraging members to breed from mares registered in section B of the Studbook to Stallions registered in section A, whereby points should be awarded to the mare based on the success of her progeny in the show ring at Championship Status Shows. The rules of the scheme stipulated that to be eligible for points the progeny must be registered in its appropriate section of the Studbook.Cash awards are made annually to the three mares gaining the highest number of points from the successes of their progeny, and ten Summerhays Award Scheme Certificates are presented each year at the Society AGM. Arguably in today’s climate the best mares are not necessarily reaping the rewards as many of today’s broodmares and stallions are registered in associated registers to the main Studbook, and subsequent progeny are ineligible for points.
